Scientifically confirmed: SBTi validates STRABAG's climate targets

  • Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validates the construction group’s climate targets through to 2030
  • Three key levers for science-based pathway to emissions reduction
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated STRABAG’s carbon reduction targets. By 2030, the company has committed to reducing its own emissions and those from purchased energy by 42 percent compared to 2023. In addition, a quarter of the emissions generated along the value chain – primarily from purchased construction materials and the use phase of buildings and infrastructure – are to be reduced.

Three key pillars are intended to significantly reduce STRABAG’s emissions. A large share of the Group’s passenger cars and commercial vehicles will be electric in future. In addition, around two thirds of construction machinery must be converted to renewable energy sources. Alongside the use of HVO, STRABAG is focusing on alternative powertrain technologies for heavy construction machinery, such as a hydrogen-powered wheel loader in Austria. As a third key measure, emissions from asphalt mixing plants are to be gradually reduced. To lower emissions from upstream and downstream activities along the value chain, STRABAG is focusing on low-emission materials, efficient planning and closer collaboration throughout the supply chain.

Science-based transformation towards an ecological business model
  • The validation of our climate targets by the Science Based Targets initiative shows that our sustainability strategy is on the right track. Credible climate targets must be transparent, comparable and science-based. Moving away from fossil fuels towards renewable solutions is essential. To achieve this, we as a company must work hand in hand with our customers, suppliers and policymakers.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a coalition of several non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Since 2015, more than 1,000 companies worldwide have joined to set scientifically grounded climate targets. Participating companies commit to reducing their CO₂ emissions consistent with limiting global warming to 1.5 °C in line with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. STRABAG announced its commitment to SBTi at the end of 2024. Following a thorough review, the NGO has now validated the company’s near-term targets through to 2030.
