STRABAG has been awarded the contract to build the new central emergency department at Klinik Favoriten in Vienna on behalf of the Wiener Gesundheitsverbund (Vienna Healthcare Group). What makes this contract special is that STRABAG will be responsible not only for the construction works but also for the electrical engineering and building services. This brings together the company’s core capabilities for delivering a highly complex hospital project under one roof.
The new central emergency department forms part of the new central hospital building at Klinik Favoriten, one of Wiener Gesundheitsverbund’s largest healthcare construction projects. The building will bring together key medical departments and provide modern healthcare infrastructure in the south of Vienna. With approximately 65,000 m² of usable floor space, the new facility will accommodate the new central emergency department, including patient admission and initial treatment units, highly specialised intensive care units, outpatient clinics, diagnostic and interventional facilities and several inpatient wards for internal medicine and pulmonology.
The first construction phase is scheduled to become operational in 2030.
Hospitals are among the most technically demanding types of buildings. In addition to the construction work itself, ensuring a secure energy supply and the seamless interaction of complex technical systems are particularly important.
Technical infrastructure plays an especially critical role in a central emergency department. It must ensure reliable operation around the clock while meeting the highest standards of hygiene, energy efficiency and functionality.
STRABAG subsidiary Lohr Gebäudetechnik is responsible for all building services on the project. These include energy supply and distribution systems, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and sanitary installations, building automation and communication, security and electrical systems designed to ensure the high availability required for hospital operations.
Construction work in an operational hospital is among the most demanding tasks in building construction. At Klinik Favoriten, the work will take place immediately adjacent to intensive care units, outpatient clinics and other sensitive medical facilities. In addition to meeting the highest quality and hygiene standards, this requires working methods that minimise noise and vibration. Limited space and a single access point to the construction site also call for meticulous logistics planning.
The success of the project therefore depends not only on the construction work itself but also on the ability to coordinate complex processes in a way that ensures uninterrupted hospital operations throughout the construction period.
For STRABAG, the project exemplifies the growing integration of construction, building services and building operations. Particularly in technically demanding buildings such as hospitals, it is becoming increasingly important to consider future operational requirements from the earliest stages of design and construction.
With expertise spanning the entire building lifecycle, STRABAG can bring together building construction, building services and facility management in an integrated approach. This reduces interfaces and enables close coordination of design, construction and operational processes. The company’s building services and facility management expertise is consolidated under STRABAG PFS as a building solutions provider.
The project will enable STRABAG to further expand its expertise in demanding healthcare and infrastructure projects. Hospitals, research facilities and other specialised buildings place particularly high demands on design, construction and operation due to their technical complexity.
The new central emergency department at Klinik Favoriten will therefore not only make an important contribution to healthcare provision in Vienna but also demonstrate the growing importance of integrated construction and building services solutions for complex building projects.
