STRABAG consortium awarded a 219-million-euro infrastructure project in North Macedonia

  • 11.5 km of new motorway between Bukojčani and Kičevo, including a twin-tube tunnel, five bridges and two viaducts
  • Key section of European Corridor VIII to establish a continuous motorway connection between Skopje and Ohrid

A consortium led by STRABAG S.R.L. with a 50% stake, is to carry out a 219-million-euro infrastructure project in North Macedonia. The 11.5-kilometre Bukojčani–Kičevo section of the E65 motorway will include an approximately 370-meter twin-tube tunnel, two viaducts and infrastructure associated with the construction of the 2x2-lane carriageway. The consortium will also be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the completed section for a period of five years. The planned duration of the construction works is four years.

The public procurement procedure was launched by the North Macedonian Public Enterprise for State Roads (PESR) and conducted via the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s (EBRD) electronic procurement system. In a multi-stage tender process lasting more than a year, the STRABAG consortium was selected from among ten pre-qualified bidders.

  • The award of this project underlines our strong track record and capabilities in delivering major infrastructure projects across Southeast Europe. We are particularly pleased that our scope includes not only construction, but also the operation and maintenance of the completed section, reflecting the trust placed in our long-term infrastructure expertise.

The project forms part of Pan-European Transport Corridor VIII. The aim of the development is to establish a faster and safer road link between Skopje, the tourist centre of Ohrid and the Albanian border. The new road will link the Gostivar–Bukojčani and Kičevo–Ohrid sections, which are already under construction. As the route runs through mountainous terrain, the project’s key technical elements include a twin-tube tunnel with a length of approximately 370 metres, two viaducts and five bridges, as well as the construction of associated junctions, retaining walls, drainage systems and road safety facilities.

The EBRD is providing a credit facility of 110 million euros for the project, secured by a state guarantee, whilst the European Union is contributing approximately 20 million euros in non-repayable grants to the investment through the Western Balkans Investment Framework.
