STRABAG to build fast-charging network for electric heavy goods vehicles in Germany

STRABAG, eLoaded and R:loaded join forces to establish 25 fast-charging hubs in southern and western Germany on behalf of Autobahn GmbH
Modern charging systems enable fast charging at up to 2,500 kWh at all locations

Together with eLoaded and R:loaded, STRABAG has secured the contract for a major project (Lot 4) as part of Autobahn GmbH’s nationwide fast-charging network for electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs). The contract calls for the installation of a total of 140 charging points at 25 unserviced motorway rest areas in southern and western Germany, with STRABAG contributing its expertise in energy infrastructure construction and its partners providing technical expertise in power grids and electromobility.

New charging system as a key technology

State-of-the-art charging systems will provide fast-charging capabilities at all locations. The highest performance category, the Megawatt Charging System (MCS), will allow eHGVs to charge at up to 2,500 kW, significantly faster than previously possible. While the MCS standard is still relatively uncommon today, it is expected to become a key technology for electric heavy goods transport in the future, combining high charging power with high charging efficiency.

The extreme weather this summer has made it clear that we cannot rely exclusively on a single mode of transport. Waterways, railways and roads must all be modernised and made more sustainable. Autobahn GmbH’s charging infrastructure programme demonstrates how electromobility for heavy goods vehicles can contribute to a high-performance, modern transport infrastructure.

Charging Infrastructure programme on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport

STRABAG is building the fast-charging points, while eLoaded is contributing its expertise in the supply and planning of the infrastructure systems. The Start-up R:loaded will then be responsible for operating and managing the locations until mid-2034. The project forms part of Autobahn GmbH’s nationwide charging infrastructure programme being rolled out on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport, which will see a total of 863 charging points installed at 124 locations across Germany to create a reliable infrastructure for electric mobility. Lot 4 is scheduled for completion in 2030.
