STRABAG consortium awarded € 177 million contract in the Czech Republic: new D35 section to strengthen regional connectivity

  • 16.3 kilometres of motorway between Úlibice and Hořice, including 18 bridges and 2,782 metres of noise barriers
  • Opening to traffic after 34 months
  • Contract value: approx. € 177 million (CZK 4.3 billion), STRABAG share 85%

STRABAG SIS a.s., the Czech subsidiary and road infrastructure specialist of STRABAG SE, has been awarded the contract to build a new section of the D35 motorway between Úlibice and Hořice in the Czech Republic as lead partner in a consortium. The project, with a total volume of around € 177 million (STRABAG share: 85%), comprises the construction of 16.3 kilometres of motorway including 18 bridge structures as well as noise barriers and one junction. Construction is expected to last around 46 months, with work commenced in April 2026. The road is planned to be opened to traffic after 34 months.

Strategically important route for international freight transport

The new section of the D35 forms part of the expansion of the national motorway network under the Transport Infrastructure Development Plan of the Czech Republic. As part of the international transport corridor E442, the D35 plays a key role for both freight and passenger traffic. The new alignment will replace the existing two-lane highway I/35 between Úlibice and Hořice, which connects several communities and is already heavily congested due to high volumes of heavy goods vehicles.
  • We are delighted to contribute to modern and safe mobility infrastructure in the Czech Republic with this major project. The new section will ease the burden on the region, improve mobility, and significantly enhance safety along this vital transport corridor.

Extensive construction works using state-of-the-art technology

In addition to more than 16 kilometres of motorway, the project includes a total of 18 bridge structures with a combined length of 914 metres to cross several watercourses and railway lines. The scope of works also include the relocation of utility lines, the installation of drainage systems, a grade-separated junction (with branch lengths of 1,209 metres) and approximately 2,800 metres of noise barriers.

STRABAG has a high level of internal value creation in transportation infrastructure construction and is again combining the expertise of several Group entities on this large-scale project. This ensures reliable execution quality through the optimal use of in-house resources. Modern 3D machine control technology and LEAN methods will be used to ensure efficient construction and logistics processes.
