Ground-breaking ceremony: STRABAG to build infrastructure for a large-scale battery storage facility in Waltrop

STRABAG AG is to undertake the construction of the infrastructure for the development and operation of the Waltrop Battery Park, one of Germany’s largest battery storage projects. The plant, developed by Trianel Batteriepark Waltrop GmbH & Co. KG (TBW) is set to make a significant contribution to grid stabilisation, congestion management and increasing the flexibility of the electricity market, with a planned capacity of around 900 MW and a storage capacity of approximately 1,800 MWh. The project is scheduled to come on stream in the second half of 2028. The ground-breaking ceremony on 21 September 2026 marked the first milestone in the construction process.

STRABAG is responsible for developing the entire site, thereby laying the groundwork for the construction and operation of the battery storage park. The scope of work also includes the turnkey construction of the associated buildings for the 380 kV substation, as well as the provision of the necessary infrastructure for its construction and operation.

Complex construction logistics

The project’s location in the port area gives rise to specific requirements. During construction, access to a pipeline crossing the site will be ensured. Equally, ongoing port operations, the use of infrastructure for heavy-goods transport and the need to keep mast sites for existing extra-high-voltage power lines clear are taken into account. Existing groundwater monitoring points are also integrated into the construction processes.
