An important step towards the comprehensive renovation of the busy right-hand section of the Rhine between Troisdorf and Wiesbaden: DB InfraGO has awarded the final construction contracts for the general refurbishment of the more than 80-kilometer stretch between North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse. For the fifth and northernmost construction section between Troisdorf and Unkel, the companies Schweerbau, Eiffage and Strabag Rail have been awarded the contract for the two main construction lots to the north and south of the S13 expansion project. DB InfraGO was already able to award the construction work for the four other construction sections in Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse in summer 2025. Now the teams can also begin with the detailed planning for the northernmost construction section.
The planned construction work in North Rhine-Westphalia in detail
During the five-month general refurbishment of the right-hand section of the Rhine between Troisdorf and Wiesbaden, DB plans to renew more than 15,000 metres of track, replace over 50 points, change the overhead line over around 16,000 metres and modernize the Niederdollendorf, Königswinter, Rhöndorf and Bad Honnef stations in North Rhine-Westphalia alone. Bad Honnef station will be relocated 500 meters north to the terminus of light rail line 66. In addition, DB is also equipping the entire line with modern control and safety technology during the closure and is pressing ahead with the construction of the new passenger underpass on Drachenfelsstraße in Königswinter
