STRABAG transforms former coal mine in Katowice into a modern technology hub

  • Revitalisation of the disused Wieczorek coal mine in Poland to create a modern technology hub
  • Climate-friendly building technologies based on renewable energy
  • Contract value: approx. € 135 million (PLN 577.2 million)
STRABAG Sp. z o.o., the Polish subsidiary of STRABAG SE, was awarded the contract on 1 August 2025 for the first construction phase to convert the former Wieczorek coal mine in Katowice. The aim is to create a sustainable technology hub. The project is considered a lighthouse initiative in Katowice’s transformation from an industrial to an innovation location. The contract value is approximately € 135 million, with a construction period of 32 months from contract signing.

Industrial heritage meets modern urban development

The Wieczorek coal mine, which has stood for over 100 years, is being restored and ushered into a modern future. The redevelopment will see the creation of modern infrastructure and sustainable energy systems aimed at attracting technology-oriented businesses – particularly in the fields of e-sports and future technologies such as artificial intelligence. A public park is also planned.

The revitalised buildings will provide space for research and development laboratories as well as multifunctional demonstration areas. These will be supplemented by educational and innovation programmes in cooperation with regional educational institutions – including interactive formats using virtual and augmented reality. The former mining site will become a centre for knowledge transfer, technological innovation and sustainable urban development.
  • As part of our Strategy 2030, we are specifically focusing on future fields such as reconstruction, conversion and refurbishment, as well as technological leadership. This project demonstrates what we are capable of – and shows that we are the right partner for sustainable building revitalisation.

    Stefan Kratochwill
    CEO of STRABAG SE
The project forms part of Katowice’s urban development strategy to transform former industrial sites into future-oriented innovation hubs and create attractive conditions for businesses. STRABAG is also involved in the redevelopment of former industrial areas in nearby Dąbrowa Górnicza city centre. A multifunctional urban development complex called the Living Factory is currently under construction here on the site of the former Desum machine tool plant. The derelict site is being transformed into a sustainable development offering workplaces, cultural activities, dining options and green traffic-calmed public spaces.
