Modernisation drive for Czech Railways: STRABAG Rail awarded contracts worth around € 360 million

  • Upgrading and expansion of first section of high-speed railway between Brno and Přerov
  • Comprehensive renovation of railway junction at Česká Třebová

STRABAG Rail is delivering two strategic key contracts co-financed by the EU to modernise the railway infrastructure in the Czech Republic. The first project covers an almost ten-kilometre section between Nezamyslice and Kojetín on the Brno–Přerov line that is currently being upgraded for high-speed trains. The STRABAG subsidiary is leading the consortium responsible for the modernisation, which involves double tracking of the line and doubling the line speed, resulting in shorter travel times. The STRABAG share of the contract amounts to approximately € 110 million. Construction began at the end of May and is scheduled to last around three and a half years, with completion expected by the end of January 2029.

The most prominent structure along the route is a 744-metre-long twin-track railway tunnel being built near Němčice using open-cut construction. A new junction is also being constructed at Hruška, allowing the route to be split and increasing the line’s capacity. Two stops – Měrovice nad Hanou and Němčice nad Hanou – will be upgraded to modern, barrier-free standards. The latter will be relocated westward and expanded to include a new bus terminal with car and bicycle parking. Along the route, 2,300 metres of noise barriers will be installed and a number of new reinforced concrete frame and composite bridges constructed. Once completed, train movements along the line will be monitored using the European safety systems ETCS and GSM-R.

The second project involves the extensive modernisation of the high-traffic railway junction at Česká Třebová, which STRABAG Rail is also delivering as part of a consortium arrangement. The works include approximately 72 kilometres of track, all overhead lines and 30 bridge structures, making it the largest tender ever issued by the Czech Railway Administration. Tracks for both passenger and freight traffic will be completely rebuilt. All platforms will be modernised and made barrier-free, including new canopies, and a new pedestrian bridge made of steel will be built to connect the two parts of town, replacing an outdated underpass.

The project is scheduled for completion in early 2032. Preparatory works will be carried out throughout 2025, including the installation of temporary signalling systems, construction of the new Potok junction and initial sections of the rail network. Work has also begun on a new connecting line in Třebovice. The main works at the passenger station are planned for 2028.

  • These two prestigious projects allow STRABAG Rail to contribute its full expertise and long-standing experience in railway construction. Both play a strategic role in creating a modern, sustainable Czech railway infrastructure and in linking it to the trans-European transport network. Travellers can already look forward to greater comfort and shorter journey times.
