STRABAG Real Estate takes over former Karstadt site in Esslingen am Neckar

  • SRE Stuttgart area realizes 140 residential units and revitalizes former department store for commercial use
  • Rescheduling provides for improvement of the energy standard in existing and new buildings up to KfW 40 (QNG)
  • Start of construction scheduled for Q3 2025 and (partial) completion in 2028
  • STRABAG's sister company Ed. Züblin AG is responsible for the building construction as general contractor
Stuttgart/Esslingen. 26.02.2025. The SRE Stuttgart division has acquired the former Karstadt site (8,866 m²) in Esslingen am Neckar.

Four residential buildings with 140 residential units will be built on the former parking lot of the department store. The existing property (approx. 13,800 m²) will be comprehensively revitalized from the façade to the energy concept and then rented out commercially. The necessary parking spaces with the associated charging infrastructure for electric vehicles will be created in the underground car park.

A key central property in a central location in the city is now finally being developed for the future. The transport links to Stuttgart and the nearby Stuttgart airport are convenient, both by car and by public transport.

STRABAG Real Estate will start marketing the commercial space in the near future: large-scale retail, local supply and medical practices (basement - 2nd floor) and a fitness studio (3rd floor) are planned.

STRABAG Real Estate intends to become increasingly active in residential projects in the Württemberg region. The SRE team is currently working on the former post office site in Leonberg (IBA'27 project) and a purely residential project in Bad Friedrichshall. Around 400 apartments will be realized with these projects in the coming years. This volume is to be significantly increased through the acquisition of new projects.
