Fehmarn Sound Crossing: STRABAG secures key infrastructure project in Germany

  • Major contract for tunnel link to island of Fehmarn
  • Crossing forms part of forward-looking Scandinavian–Mediterranean Corridor
  • STRABAG and ZÜBLIN units joining forces to build link between Großenbrode and Fehmarn
STRABAG has been commissioned by DB InfraGO AG to execute several construction sections of the Fehmarn Sound Crossing. This marks the start of a major future-facing infrastructure project that will connect the island of Fehmarn with the German mainland via an underground link. With a length of approximately 2.2 kilometres, the new tunnel will replace the existing Fehmarn Sound Bridge with a high-capacity connection for both road and rail. Road traffic will run on four lanes through two tunnel tubes, while the rail line will be routed on two tracks in separate tubes.

STRABAG takes on key role in once-in-a-century project

The project forms part of the cross-border Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link, a central missing link in the Scandinavian–Mediterranean Corridor, the longest core corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network. The corridor connects Scandinavia’s major metropolitan areas and ports with northern Germany and Italy, thereby strengthening European mobility and economic competitiveness.
  • The Fehmarn Sound Crossing is a high-capacity link whose significance extends far beyond the region itself. This project is an important step in the continuous development of Europe’s infrastructure and a clear commitment to modern mobility. With this contract, we are underscoring our leading role in the German infrastructure market. With around 40,000 employees in Germany, we have a strong local presence and are ideally positioned to play a leading role in shaping the country’s infrastructure modernisation drive.

As part of the alliance project, project partners DB InfraGO AG and DEGES are jointly responsible for the design and build phases. STRABAG has secured several major contract packages.

Contract Package 2 covers earthworks, civil engineering and superstructure works and will be delivered by a consortium consisting of STRABAG and ZÜBLIN together with JOHANN BUNTE and Eiffage Infra-Bau. ZÜBLIN, together with PORR and Implenia, has also been awarded the ground engineering works (Contract Package 6). Contract Package 7 will be delivered by ZÜBLIN with the support of other STRABAG units. This package includes, among other elements, construction of the cut-and-cover tunnel sections and several trough structures.
