STRABAG upgrading Berlin-Köpenick station for regional rail service

  • Last part of DB Netz AG’s extensive project to upgrade the west-east corridor from Berlin to the Polish border near Frankfurt (Oder)
  • Project execution by STRABAG Rail as general contractor
  • Shorter travel times at up to 160 km/h and axle load of 25 t starting in 2027

Vienna/Freital 11 October 2022 STRABAG Rail has been commissioned by DB Netz AG to upgrade the Köpenick rail station in south-east Berlin to handle regional rail traffic. The new station is a key element of Berlin’s transport concept and part of the extensive project to modernise the west-east corridor from Berlin to the Polish border near Frankfurt (Oder). STRABAG Rail Gmbh is leading the comprehensive modernisation works together with STRABAG AG, STRABAG Fahrleitungen GmbH and ZÜBLIN Stahlbau GmbH. The contract value amounts to around € 154 million.

Starting in 2027, the railway line will enable shorter travel times between the cities of Magdeburg, Potsdam, Berlin and Frankfurt (Oder) at speeds of up to 160 km/h. “The upgrade of Köpenick station is not only important for Berlin’s transport concept, but also creates an improved rail connection to Eastern Europe, further helping to lay the foundation for a modern, fast, trans-European rail network. We are very happy that DB Netz AG has once again placed its trust in our railway construction expertise,” says Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE.

The STRABAG Group entities will begin construction in spring 2023, with the station scheduled to go into operation in 2027. An approximately 3 km section of track will also be renewed, running largely parallel to the S-Bahn line. Besides two new tracks for regional rail traffic, a passing loop will provide a better connection between Berlin’s outer ring and the west-east corridor. In addition to the existing island platform, which is only designed for S-Bahn traffic, the project also includes the construction of a new, approximately 220 m long regional service platform with three new entrances, two of them barrier-free. The works also include the renewal and upgrade of five railway bridges, the construction of supporting structures and 18,000 m² of noise barriers over a length of about 4 km, as well as the modernisation of the overhead lines.
