STRABAG continues upgrade of S19 expressway in Poland for € 85 million
24 February 2022
- 14 km long section in design-and-build process
- Contract value of approx. € 85.5 million
- Part of European north-south transport axis Via Carpatia
Vienna/Warsaw, 24 February 2022---STRABAG, the European construction technology group, has received another major contract in Poland. The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) has awarded the construction of a further approx. 14 km section of the S19 expressway to the Polish STRABAG subsidiary STRABAG Sp. z o.o.
The contract, to be implemented over a period of 42 months as a design-and-build project, represents a further expansion of the European transport axis Via Carpatia between Klaipėda in Lithuania and Thessaloniki in Greece. The project comprises two planning stages: approx. 7.5 km of new roadway plus a further 6.2 km upgrade of the right-hand carriageway of the Międzyrzec Podlaski bypass as part of the bypass road’s second construction stage.
The construction includes the renewal of two exits and six civil engineering structures, including several passages for animals and amphibians, as well as two rest areas plus additional technical infrastructure and facilities for environmental protection. Along the Międzyrzec Podlaski bypass section, which is being widened to include an additional lane, the contract also foresees construction of a railway overpass as well as noise barriers, among other things.
STRABAG has already realised 41 km of Via Carpatia
“The Via Carpatia motorway network is an important north-south link in Europe from the Baltic to the Mediterranean Sea. STRABAG has played a major role in the construction so far,” says Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE. The company has already built 41 km of motorway between Lublin and Rzeszów, which were opened to traffic at the end of last year. In 2021, contracts were also signed for three sections of the S19 for a total of 38 km.
