- Bielański Hospital in Warsaw to be extensively modernised and expanded
- Consortium of STRABAG Sp. z o.o. and Ed. Züblin AG
- Completion scheduled for June 2023
Vienna/Warsaw, 8 October 2020---European-based construction group STRABAG SE is setting a new milestone in the Polish market. A consortium consisting of its subsidiaries STRABAG Sp. z o.o. of Poland and Ed. Züblin AG are realising the first-ever expansion of a hospital in the country carried out completely using the BIM 5D® (Building Information Modelling) method. The contract for the modernisation and expansion of the Bielański Hospital in Warsaw has a value of approx. € 27 million. Construction is scheduled to be completed by June 2023.
“I am proud that we are the first construction company in Poland to be able to use BIM 5D® in hospital construction,” says Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE. “Cost and planning reliability are extremely important, especially in public procurement infrastructure projects, and BIM 5D® is a way of guaranteeing this aim. The method creates the greatest possible transparency for all involved and helps us set new standards as a technology leader on the Polish market.”
The project comprises the construction of a new building with five floors plus one underground level with a total area of around 12,000 m² as well as the refurbishment of existing buildings and the construction of a connecting wing. The new wing will include a surgical section with ten operating rooms. The modernisation works on the existing buildings include new vertical and horizontal transport solutions, the installation of two bed lifts at the stairways, and the renovation of the heating and cooling rooms, the cloakroom, the serological laboratory and the hospital chapel.
BIM 5D® creates advantages even with ongoing operations
Building information modelling enables cost, planning and scheduling reliability not only during the construction phase; the 5D® model continues to offer enormous benefits for the building’s operator during day-to-day operations. After completion of the construction works, the property can be managed using a facility management tool offered by STRABAG and based on the BIM model. The application enables further cost savings during ongoing operations over the entire life cycle of the building.
The contract to expand the Bielański Hospital further strengthens STRABAG’s position in the construction of projects in the healthcare sector in Poland. The company is currently also involved in the construction of the Warsaw South Hospital, the Department of Ophthalmology at the Military Medical Institute in Warsaw and another institute location in Legionowo.
