STRABAG bolsters market position in Czech railway construction with € 106 million order

  • Upgrade of 9.6 km section from Dětmarovice to the Polish border
  • Consortium with Czech partner OHL ŽS a.s (STRABAG’s share: 66.5 %)
  • Project schedule: 29 months

Vienna/Prague, 7 September 2020---STRABAG Rail a.s., a subsidiary of publicly listed construction group STRABAG SE, has been awarded a contract in the Czech Republic to modernise an approximately 9.6 km long section of track with six level crossings from Dětmarovice to Petrovice u Karviné on the state border with Poland. STRABAG is carrying out the € 106 million contract in a consortium with Czech construction company OHL ŽS a.s. The consortium is being led by STRABAG with a share of 66.5 %.

Works have already started and will last 29 months. The client is the Czech railway infrastructure authority (Správa železnic s.o.). The infrastructure project is being co-financed by the EU under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).

“As the second largest construction company in the Czech Republic, STRABAG is a reliable and sought-after partner for the modernisation and further development of the country’s transportation infrastructure, both in railway and road construction. Among other things, we are currently modernising the 11 km long Soběslav–Doubí rail section as well as a 12 km long section between Oldřichov u Duchcova and Bílina,” explains Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE.

Safety, accessibility and sustainability
The contract primarily covers substructure restoration and track renewal. Additionally, platforms will be upgraded, roofed and provided with barrier-free access and bridge structures will be renovated. The project also comprises the modernisation and replacement of the technical infrastructure such as safety, signalling and power installations, electric switch heating, lighting and overhead lines. The modernisation will bring the railway line up to the state of the art, shortening travel times, increasing passenger comfort and safety, and providing barrier-free access.

An important part of the overall project is the rehabilitation of the Závada–Koukolná section over a length of 1.1 km with special attention given to sustainability: material from the existing track bed will be reused for the upgrade.
