STRABAG wins € 110 million large-scale contract to equip the Karawanks Tunnel

  • ASFINAG commissions € 110 million contract
  • Karawanks Tunnel to be equipped with tunnel technology and safety installations
  • Success in Europe-wide tender
As a transalpine transport link from Austria to Slovenia, the Karawanks Tunnel is one of the most important transport infrastructure projects in both countries, with 4.5 km located on Austrian territory and 3.5 km on Slovenian territory. Following a Europe-wide tender, STRABAG won the large-scale contract for the operational and safety-related tunnel equipment for a total value of € 110 million (package 1 & 2). STRABAG Infrastructure & Safety Solutions, or SISS for short, will execute this large-scale contract.
  • We are delighted to have won the contract for the tunnelling technology of the Karawanks Tunnel. We can contribute our expertise perfectly here so that all road users can pass through the tunnel safely in future

Equipment with operational and safety installations

The new 8 km long tunnel tube will be equipped with operating and safety installations by the end of 2025. Among other things, 2,570 tunnel lights, 378 video cameras and around 1,300 kilometres of power and control cables will be installed in the tunnel tubes.
All of the lighting, ventilation, fire detection systems, extinguishing systems, traffic lights, escape route signage, video surveillance, equipment for the operating stations and electronics, sensors, power supply and the connection to the monitoring centres of ASFINAG and the Slovenian DARS will be installed in the coming months.

Works to begin at the end of 2024

The Austrian section of the newly built Karawanks Tunnel is already structurally complete. Works on the safety system will therefore begin on the Austrian side at the end of 2024 and will continue from 2025 with structural completion on the Slovenian side. ASFINAG expects the new tunnel tube to be open to two-way traffic at the end of 2025.

Following structural refurbishment of the existing tunnel tube by mid-2027, the installation of the electrical and mechanical equipment in the existing tube will be continued. The Karawanks Tunnel is to be completed and in operation with unidirectional traffic by the end of 2028.
