STRABAG building new venue for young artists of the Vienna State Opera

  • Transformation of the French Hall in the Vienna Künstlerhaus into a modern performance and rehearsal space for young audiences and the next generation of artists
  • Realisation as PPP project with total project costs of € 20.5 million
  • Completion and handover scheduled for September 2024

Vienna, 30 September 2021---The publicly listed construction company STRABAG SE has been awarded the contract to convert the French Hall of the Vienna Künstlerhaus into a new opera venue with up to 279 seats. The Vienna State Opera’s new stage for performances and rehearsals is intended especially for young audiences and emerging talents. The project will create the necessary space to give young people an opportunity to engage with the next generation of artists. The new venue will thus allow the Vienna State Opera to optimally fulfil its cultural and entrepreneurial mission.

“We select our projects with great care in order to make a lasting and focused contribution. These long-term commitments help us focus on next-generation talents, children and young people. With the Vienna State Opera, we have found a partner for whom long-term commitment is just as important. We are proud that our support will secure the future of this internationally renowned opera house, which is so important for Austria as a cultural nation, for decades to come,” says Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE.

Renovation being carried as PPP project with total project costs of € 20.5 million
The project is being carried out under a public-private partnership arrangement. The project partners of the Vienna State Opera are Künstlerhausbesitz und -betriebs GmbH (KBBG), STRABAG SE, Haselsteiner Familien-Privatstiftung and the Federal Ministry of Arts and Culture, Civil Service and Sport. According to the current planning, the total project costs for the construction of the French Hall as a performance and rehearsal space for the Vienna State Opera come to € 20.5 million. Of this amount, the federal ministry is contributing € 5 million in the form of a grant, € 10 million is being provided by STRABAG through sponsoring, while the remaining € 5.5 million is being financed by the Haselsteiner Familien-Privatstiftung.

Completion and handover scheduled for September 2024
The first phase of construction, which has already begun, will end in September 2021 because of three exhibitions being held in the neighbouring Albertina Modern from October 2021 to January 2023. The vibrations from construction would make it impossible to hold these exhibitions, so work will resume in February 2023. Completion and handover of the French Hall to the Vienna State Opera is scheduled for September 2024.
