Groundbreaking ceremony for educational campus Seestadt Aspern Nord

  • PPP model to design, build, finance and operate
  • Contract awarded to bidding consortium of STRABAG Real Estate (SRE) and HYPO NOE Leasing
  • STRABAG AG and Siemens Gebäudemanagement & -Services G.m.b.H. (SGS) to share responsibility for the build phase – start of use in August 2021

Vienna, 4 June 2019 Together with the city of Vienna, represented by city councillor Jürgen Czernohorszky and Ernst Nevrivy, the district head of Donaustadt, the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the educational campus Seestadt Aspern Nord took place on 17 May 2019. The campus will further expand the already existing educational infrastructure in Vienna’s largest urban expansion area.

The bidding consortium of HYPO NOE Leasing and STRABAG Real Estate (SRE) was awarded the contract in an EU-wide tender for the further design, build, finance and operate phases of the educational campus Seestadt Aspern Nord and the educational campus Aron Menczer. This was the first time that two locations were awarded in one package.

The new educational facility includes a kindergarten with 12 groups, an all-day elementary school with 17 classes and a middle school with 16 classes, for a total of 1,100 children, as well as a youth centre.
The facility is scheduled to open on schedule at the beginning of the 2021/22 school year.

While HYPO NOE Leasing and STRABAG Real Estate share responsibility for the provision of the tailor-made financing solution, the project partners STRABAG AG and Siemens Gebäudemanagement & -Services G.m.b.H. (SGS) will ensure the on-schedule construction of the new educational facility. With the start of use, SGS will then assume the building management over the contract period of 25 years and, in this function, will be in charge of the ongoing operations and of the technical maintenance of the building.

“An education is the most important tool that we can give to our children. It is therefore our task to challenge and to support tomorrow’s talents in the best possible way. This is also at the focus of this project, because the educational campus will educate many children and so energise the future of our country. It is therefore a great pleasure for me, as the state-owned regional bank for Lower Austria and Vienna, to be a partner in this project,” said Wolfgang Viehauser, member of the management board of HYPO NOE, at the groundbreaking ceremony.

“Social infrastructure projects in the form of PPP models bundle the competences of project development and building construction – both of which are focal points within the STRABAG Group,” says Johannes Mayr, managing director of SRE Austria.

“With the ever-increasing complexity of modern construction projects, the demands placed on the people who realise them are also increasing. Only when all project participants work together constructively, openly and trustingly can all goals be successfully implemented with maximum efficiency. That is the basic principle of STRABAG,” says Markus Engerth, division manager at STRABAG AG.

“Lifecycle-oriented procurement, as used in this project, is the best guarantee for sustainability with an impact on lifecycle costs and the overall design, build and operate phases,” explains Manfred Völker, managing director of SGS. “Over the years, we have acquired a great deal of know-how in this area – in particular with regard to sustainable design and multi-year management, which will now flow into the Seestadt Aspern Nord educational campus.”
